Parking for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

Being the vibrant and richly diverse city that it is known to be, Birmingham makes for the ideal host for the Commonwealth Games 2022!

Bringing nations together under the Commonwealth to embrace humanity, diversity, youth, and inclusion.

Once called the ‘Festival of the Empire’ held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930 in celebration of the coronation of King George V. partakers included the United Kingdom, Australia, Bermuda, British Guiana, Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand, and South Africa demonstrating the unity of the British Empire. The conservative nature of the time when the games were first established, meant women only participated in the swimming portion of the games. However, from these humble beginnings of just 11 countries and 400 athletes, it has vastly expanded its stage over the decades into a modern sporting spectacular of 71 nations with 6,600 athletes and team officials.

Some marvellous and memorable highlights of the games include John Landy becoming the first to break the four-minute mile in a race that became known as the ‘Miracle Mile’.

Chantal Petitclerc became the first gold medal winner in a para-sport in 2002. The occasion marked the first time an event for an athlete with a disability had been part of the official games.

In 2014 in women’s boxing, Nicola Adams of Team England took the first gold medal in the flyweight division.

The very spirit of the Games has been the driving force behind these phenomenal athletes to push beyond their limits and truly perform to the body’s fullest potential.

The Commonwealth games brings a festival full of exhilarating fast paced sport and impressive sportsmanship! With visitors from all around the globe, this is an event not to be missed. Showcasing the best of Birmingham, the West Midlands, and the Commonwealth, expect 2 whole weeks of greatness including 280+ medal events, 19 different sports and over 4,500 athletes packed into 11 intense days of competition!

The games will be held from Thursday, 28 July 2022 and will end on Monday, 8 August 2022. There is lots to see and plenty to experience.
